How to Choose Your First Pickleball Paddle

Choosing your first pickleball paddle can feel overwhelming: there are dozens of brands, materials, and price points, and most spec sheets are written for players who already know what they're looking for. The good news is that, to get started, there are really only three variables that change how a paddle feels in your hand: weight, grip size, and core material.

Weight: your first filter

Most paddles weigh between 190 and 230 grams. Lighter paddles (under 210g) give you more maneuverability and control near the net, with less arm fatigue over long matches. Heavier paddles add natural power to your swing, at the cost of slower reaction time during fast exchanges. If you're not sure, start in the middle range (210-220g): it's where most beginners feel comfortable while they develop their playing style.

Grip size: more important than it looks

A grip that's too thick limits wrist rotation and strains your arm; one that's too thin forces you to squeeze harder to keep control, which tires out your forearm. The quick way to check: with the paddle in your hand, there should be about one index finger's width of space between your fingertips and the base of your palm. If you don't have that space, look for a thinner grip or add overgrip tape until it fits.

Core material: control vs. power

Polymer cores (the most common today) give a softer, quieter feel on contact, ideal for players who prioritize control and touch. Nomex cores are stiffer and louder, and deliver more raw power, but forgive off-center hits less. For beginners, a polymer core is usually the more forgiving option while you're still refining your technique.

Budget: you don’t need to overspend

A well-chosen beginner-to-intermediate paddle — right on weight and grip — will serve you well through your entire first year of play. You don't need the most expensive paddle on the market to improve. Save the big investment for once you know your playing style and exactly which feature you want to maximize.
